“Ian!” Lissa flung herself into my arms as soon as I stepped into the safe house. The force of her body hitting mine caused me to fall back against the door, slamming it behind me. I couldn’t hold in a chuckle. She was so cute when she got fierce.

“I missed you, too,” I murmured into her hair, holding her to me tightly.

“I’ll spare you the hug, but it’s good to see you breathing.” I glanced over Lissa’s shoulder to find Oded greeting me with a grin.

“Yeah. Thanks for that,” I said sincerely, shifting Lissa so she stood beside me, tucked against me.

Oded blinked, taken aback. “You really mean it,” he said after a moment.

“You don’t have to sound so surprised.”

His dark brows lifted. “You rarely say a kind word to me. I thought you were being sarcastic.”

“We’re on the same side. It’s time I started acting like it.” I extended my hand. “Sorry I’ve been a dick.”

His mouth opened, then closed. He took my hand and shook it firmly. “I knew we were friends.”

One corner of my lips tilted up. “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves,” I teased. Now that I was safely back with Lissa in my arms, I felt incredibly light. All my tension over my meeting with Salvation melted away. I was alive, and Lissa was warm and soft beside me.

“I’m planning on risking my neck for you, so you really should reconsider your position on the whole friendship thing,” Oded remarked.

“What are you talking about? If you mean staying here to protect Lissa, you should be safe. No one knows we’re here.”

He shook his head. “I’m not talking about that. I’ve been busy while you were gone. I’ve reached out to ADAI. I gave them the false credentials I worked up for you to show Salvation. With any luck, they’ll take the bait and introduce me to any members who might be in the area.”

I frowned at him. “You’re not a field operative.”

“Your concern is touching,” he said lightly. “But I’m operating from behind my computer for now. If I’m lucky, I won’t have to meet face-to-face. All I need is to open communication to verify if they have ties to Salvation.”

My frown deepened as I mulled over what I’d learned from Terry. “Salvation is convinced they’ve been working with Russians. Terry was furious when the evidence we fabricated on you indicated that radical Islamists might be tracking them. He didn’t seem aware of their existence, much less have been knowingly working with them.”

“That’s just it: they might not be knowingly working together. We have no idea if ADAI have been posing as Russians. They might be trying to instigate an international incident.”

“But what about the guy who stole your laptop?” Lissa interjected. “He spoke Russian. I know it.”

The spot between my eyes began to throb dully. That piece of evidence didn’t fit. I looked back to Oded.

“Keep trying to make contact with ADAI. I’ll stick with Salvation. We still have time before they plan to set off the Novichok in Willis Tower.
